Be a Good Cookie

Fun random fact #141 – In June 2016, I became an Acton-Boxborough United Way board member. Prior to joining the board, I had limited knowledge about what ABUW did. I knew that the organization supported the community. I knew that they hosted a great annual party every fall called Casino Royale. Was there something else ‘you guys’ did?

Turns out, there’s a lot more ‘something else’ that ‘we’ do. For starters, this year we are awarding $120,000 in grants to local non-profits. We help bring speakers to our community, we help send kids to camp, and this past year we also hosted a Healthy Teen Initiative where we were able to raise over $50,000 with a little boost from an anonymous matching donor. Our goal is to improve the lives of the people living in Acton and Boxborough, and in order to do this, we need to fundraise, plan and take action.

In February, we were brainstorming different ways we could bring together people. I was doodling pictures of cakes in my notebook when I had an idea: I could host a class at the bakery. I whispered it to my friend Jen Stone who also happens to be the President of the Board. Always ready for anything, Jen’s entire face lit up and she loudly whispered back YESSSS.

She looked more animated than this. I promise.

When I raised my hand and shared the idea with the group, I anticipated polite coughs and questioning eyebrows. Jen can get enthusiastic over pretty much anything, so while I appreciated her immediate response, I thought…of course she’s excited. She’s Jen. I wasn’t so sure about everyone else would be on the same page.

Turns out I was wrong. Everyone thought it was an intriguing idea, and two or three meetings later, the decision was made.

On June 7th at 7pm, I am officially opening my kitchen to teach a class on how to decorate cookies. The event is called Be a Good Cookie, because each person’s registration fee is going directly to ABUW, which means it will go to people in our towns who need our help. There will be light refreshments, a tour of my bakery (hey, B Team…time to start cleaning), a demonstration on how to make royal icing, color it and how to decorate cookies. After I’m done with my demo, everyone will have the chance to decorate their own cookies which they will take home with them along with a goodie bag provided by Kitchen Outfitters (LOVE THEM).

This class is perfect for anyone who loves to bake, cook, or putter around their kitchen. It’s even great for those who view baking from scratch as exciting as stacking wood. Why? Because it will be social. Because you can come see where I work. Because you can choose to just eat the cookies in front of you and skip the decorating part. Because you’re supporting an amazing cause. Because we will have coffee.

You know that friend who has it all together? Yeah. That’s not me. What I can offer you instead are my experiences, insights, and passions. Pithy observations about making cookies. Wry commentary on running a business. Loving (if slightly sarcastic) parenting advice. And if that doesn’t interest you, I have dogs. Cute ones.
