I’ve learned a lot over the years, as a mother, friend, daughter and business owner. Most of the time, I have an experience, process it over the next couple of hours or days, try to figure out what I need to take away from the situation and hopefully hold onto it enough so that I don’t make the same mistake twice.

Today, I just learned something else and I’m pretty sure I’ll never forget it. In my attempt to do a Facebook Live, I managed to publicly embarrass myself about half a dozen times. My pretty sign that I ‘tested’ with a selfie to make sure the writing would be legible on the FB Live? Yep…backwards. My segue into pretty handwriting? Not one of my best moments. Crazy horrified faces at the end of the video because I didn’t have my glasses on and I couldn’t figure out how to end the damn video? Sigh…

I contemplated deleting the video and doing it again. I got a new piece of paper and started to write my sign backwards. And then? And then, I crumpled the paper and threw it away.

What I learned today has nothing to do with how to make a better FB live video, although I still want to work at this and get better at it.

What I realized today is that it really is ok to not be perfect.

Sometimes in life, there’s no need for a do-over. Was the video perfect? Far from it. It was, however, heartfelt. It was 100% ‘me’ and even though there is a lot to improve for my next FB live, I don’t have anything to hide. I don’t need to pretend to be a perfect pastry chef who can write hashtags backwards with beautiful penmanship.

The second thing I remembered is that the best antidote to public humiliation is a great sense of humor. I watched my video, waited as I reached for the sign, and then just started laughing. My texts since I did the FB live have all included backwards hashtags, and I’m guessing this is something that is going to stick for a while since it continues to make me chuckle. Feel free to laugh with me…just be gentle.

onward & upward, and just #behappy.
